Never thought I'd play banjo. I've been playing bass and guitar for 40+ years -- lots of rock and roll, some bluegrass, lots of church stuff. Then, at the urging of our daughter and her husband, we stopped by to see the Avett Brothers at Merlefest in 2005 and I was amazed at the way Scott Avett wrapped his banjo playing around his brother Seth's guitar playing and I was hooked. I borrowed a banjo from co-worker Ray and ran it by my son (in the picture), who was at first skeptical, then intrigued, then hooked. I soon realized that although Scott was playing some melodic banjo, much of his playing was well placed rolls. That sent me chasing after Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, John Hartford, etc. Now, I have a hard time putting it down. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing, but when I'm happiest is when I feel like a spectator -- nothing going on in my brain except listening and feeling what my hands are doing all by themselves.
