Naked Banjo

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Sorry, this isn't about an unclothed five string. But, it is about feeling naked while up on stage. Most banjoists have the support of a band while plying their art. But, what about when asked to perform solo?
The machine like stacato of the three finger roll firing rapid volleys of sound into an audieance, brings a flush to the bluegrass enthusists face and a thrill to the heart. Take away the Mando, the Guitar, the bass, and the fiddle and you take away a suport system that is critical to the banjo's appeal.
Many people agree that the banjo is a great backup and lead instrument. As a solo instrument it can be lacking. So, I've recently learned how to frail. I think that the frailing method is more appropriate than three finger for solo work. It is also much harder to learn than I had anticipated. I found that it is critical to train your muscles to do the work without question while, your brain carries out the singular management duties involved in singing, remembering, and interacting with an audiance.
If you aren't a frailer and would like to get an idea of it's difficulty, try patting your head while rubbing your tummy, singing Yankee Doodle while dancing a jig. Then when you have mastered this most difficult feat, some guy walks by and says,"I thought they were going to have music? This is just some guy with a banjo. I wonder if he can rap?" Of course I could but, I don't want to break my banjo. Add Comment
