I started playing in 1959, maybe 1960, sort of forget now. At first it was the Kingston Trio, and then the other folk groups, but I quickly strayed over to Pete Seeger, the Weavers, and stuff like that. My first banjo, I made--a long neck, and I bought all the parts from the then new Ode Company--it was on Star Route in Bolder then. After about 65, I went in all directions but ended up in the 70's playing Bluegrass and some Old Time and teaching at a place in San Francisco called the 5th String. I started listening to more and more Old Time and ended up there. I don't think I have done much Bluegrass since maybe the 80's. Played in an Old Time Band for almost 25 years with the same fiddler. The name of the band changes often to suit the mood: Highballers from the Planet Hell, Fish Head String band, The California Diamondbacks and New Blueridge Highballers. We still play all the time today, but not much as a band. I still play daily, but more and more in the last 8 years I have become an Hawaiian Slack Key player. Experience in open G and C and forward and backward rolls allowed me to swing right into that.
