At age 15, self-taught Beatles catalogue on piano and guitar to accompany my singing. Wrote some of my own, but at 24 was press-ganged into a working bluegrass band. I was unfamiliar with the genre, and didn't play the mandolin (that they required to replace their lost member), nor could I solo. 3 weeks later I'm on stage in front of 2,500 at "Student Day" on a college campus. Two years later I heard Mondo Mando by Grisman, and that was all I wanted to sound like. I bought and learned all his music, then flew out from England to meet him. We hung out quite a bit in that spring and summer of ?. I was never good enough to be pro., 'though I did win a few contests at CA festivals.
