Clawhammer newbie...help!!!

Hello everyone. Been playing guitar, Mando etc for years. Trying to learn Clawhammer. Got the basic 'boom...chicka' action ok but having trouble getting the melody to stand out over the rest. Any tips? Tried using a finger pick but this seems like cheating.
