Compensated nut

I have my Starflower nr. 354 from 1977 i guess.

Was the compensatet nut invented then, i just had my old nut replaced and could not se any compensation on it

or is it so that the nut is just slightly closer to the firs fret.

If i want to compensate the new nut, how do i do that.
