Hi friends. Two things: first...........Im working on bringing back my dad's old four string banjo up to playing condition. I believe it is an very old (perhaps built in very early 1900's) 17 fret, short neck Irish tenor. I've replaced the top, got a new bridge & tail piece, tightened up the old friction tuners and neck.......etc. Now comes the strings. When I was a kid, my dad taught me a few standard chords and from what I have found out........think he used guitar strings & tuned in "chicago" style.......does that make sense? So what Im wondering......should I do the same? I want to play it the way my dad did........but...........what is difference between that and Irish tuning............should I buy guitar strings and discard the top(low) two........or should I buy a set of Irish tenor strings?Or......was also wondering about nylon banjolele strings?
2nd thing: I just bought a brand new modern 19 fret banjo.........want to be able to use the same chord structure on that, but right away I broke the bottom string while trying to tune it to what I thought was 'chicago" style tuning. This probably makes no sense.......just advise me as to what you would reccommend for strings on both of these instruments. Thank you
