I've been playing banjo since 2002. Dock Boggs was my first inspiration, and I started playing the banjo by trying to learn Boggs's style of thumb-lead up-picking. Afterwards, it took me about a year and a half of solid effort to learn the rudiments of clawhammer. I've been working at it ever since. If there is anyone in the Northern Westchester area (a mere 35 minutes by train from midtown Manhattan) who is interested in getting together for a jam, please let me know.
