Swept up in the Great Folk scare, my twin brother and I played banjo and guitar after ol’ Dad bought us an Ode (at the Colorado factory) on vacation in 1962. Shook hands with Earl and Lester and the Boys in 1963 and still have the autographs! Mother (yes!) bought a 1920s original 5-string Tu-ba-phone No. 9 DeLuxe about 1965. Used our music to keep my sanity thru 12 years of college and grad school and played several nights a week in the Officer’s Club at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, on a borrowed U.S. Navy banjo while mapping volcanos. Purchased an OME XXX when I started grad school and just recently added a rosewood Juggernaut to my (much larger) guitar collection—still an Ode/OME guy after all these years, but I love that old Tu-ba-phone sound! Now a retired geologist after 40 years, I’m again working on improving my banjo pickin.’
