After playing bluegrass banjo for 35 years, I decided to take up clawhammer, so started researching open back builders. After six months of internet searching and talking to dealers, I decided on Mark Platin of Wildwood. What a great decision! I currently own a Huber VRB-G, Stelling Staghorn, and a Deering GDL. All of these are beautiful, great sounding bluegrass banjos. I can not, however, say enough about the Heirloom banjo that Mark made for me. I had in my mind a very specific look, and after several telephone conversations with Mark, I felt confident that he knew what I wanted. He made several great suggestions that were incorporated into the build, and he went to work. When I received the banjo in a very reasonable time frame, I was stunned at what a gorgeous and great sounding instrument he had created. It was significantly better than what I had envisioned, and that is saying something. Visitors are way more interested in admiring the banjo than in hearing me play it (to their credit). I immediately wanted him to build me another banjo, because when I see craftsmanship like this, I want more. He is currently building me another out of macassar ebony, and I cannot wait to receive it. Thanks Wildwood, and I hope you will be making banjos well into the future. Tom Roussel
