Hi, I am trying to research some information on a family heirloom handed down, and a friend of mine suggested I join your group to get the information I am looking for.
My wife's Uncle was a banjo player in the 1920's and 30's in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, (one time supposedly played with Ralph Stanley). He was once invited to play in Washington D.C. at the Smithsonian. In 1938 he got saved and the church he attended considered music playing a sin, so he quit playing completely. His banjo has been handed down to my sister in law. She is trying to figure out a value for it and is getting many conflicting stories.
It is an S.S. Stewart from Philadelphia PA., it has the circular picture inside the head of the horse and says Thorough-Bred across the top and S.S. Stewart across the bottom. It has some fancy inlay across the peg head, but just diamond shaped inlay down the neck. She was told by one antique dealer it could be worth $1,500.00, but she sent pictures to two places in Nashville and they both offered her $400.00 and $500.00. She is trying to determine an actual value. If you can provide me with any direction to help her out and keep her from getting taken I would deeply appreciate anything you can suggest.
We live in Knoxville TN an would gladly make a weekend out of taking it some where within a 4 hour drive to get it appraised.
