Learned to play old-time clawhammer mostly at the Red Herring Coffee House in Urbana, Illinois and around. Played in contradance bands and a klezmer band in Moscow, Idaho over the years (Dancing Trout, Gefilte Trout). In the late 70s I used to jam with Chirps Smith, Gary Harrison and other friends in Urbana, and went to festivals with Chirps. Had the great fortune to meet and play with Bruce Greene at the Fraley Festival in the 70s, when I was just learning. I have lost touch with a lot of my olde Midwestern music friends as I traveled and worked overseas. Taught English with the Peace Corps in Thailand, but also taught my Thai students to square dance. I would play the banjo and call the dance! Great fun. I have had the pleasure to play banjo on the radio in Puerto Rico, on bike trip in Sumatra, and in Songkhla, Thailand every Sunday at the Samila Hotel with the world's most motley crew of Peace Corps and Thai musicians. Our pay was "farang" (western) food.
