MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION INFO:
RECOMMENDED COURSE: The medical transcription course through PCDI www.pcdi.com Length of course: The course can take up to 18 months, but I finished it in about 11 months. They send the course materials not sure if they have online options now (books, practice tapes and test sheets) and after you take the test send it in and they send the grade (see website above for cost as it may have changed since I took it 6 years ago.
The certificatin exam is from AMMT (see www.aamt.org for further info on the CMT exam)
I would recommend some knowledge of medical terminology, as that makes the course easier. I would also recommend being able to type about 45 wmp. You will need to be familiar with the HIPPA regulations, need a small shredder to dispose of any printed pages that have patient info (logsheets and any reports printed). You will also need a good medical dictionary, AAMT book of style, and Stedman's electronic spellchecker (adds the medical words to your word processor and makes life much easier).
Most transcription companies will require a transcriptionist to work on site for at least 6 months for on the site training before allowing the transcriptionist the option of working at home.
