I've been playing banjo since High School. I started out playing 3 finger Scruggs style, but after playing 7 nights a week in Gatlinburg for too long I burnt out and took up clawhammer. I've been doing that ever since. I've won a bunch of contests for whatever that's worth (not much), but mainly like to play for fun. I've been playing with a bunch known as the Mumbillies since the 1970s. We're really more of a state of mind than a band, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I've been building instruments since High School too. I started out building dulcimers and hammered dulcimers. From there I went to banjos and from there I went to guitars. I was building resophonic ukes back in the 80s, designing and building vacuum tube theremins in the 90s and came back to banjos in 1999. I've been doing that ever since. My son has become a lot better clawhammerer than I am, and that's a good thing too.
