Experience Level: Novice
Occupation: Progressive political activist
Gender: Male
Age: 73
My Instruments:
I am currently the steward of an incredible bluegrass banjo and an open-back by Canadian luthier Hugh Hunter. Both are made with american walnut in a block rim construction. I've also got a cigar box banjo crafted by Von Manchester of Smokestack Guitars and a nice little hybrid made from an older mandolin banjo pot and a Saga neck by BHO member Aaron Keim.
Favorite Bands/Musicians:
"Crooked Still" and "Outlow Social" are currently my favorite bands. Virginia has a lot of local talent, too, such as Orange Line Special, Frank Solvan II, Leah Coryell ... the list goes on. Favorite players are Mark Johnson, John Lawless, the late (great) Mike Seeger, Steve Martin...to name a few. My favorite teacher is the father-son team of Pat & Patrick Costello -- I like clawhammer and bluegrass about equally, but I'm working on my frailing skills now.

Returning to a teen-age fascination with the banjo, spawned in Tokyo, Japan in 1964. Mostly interested in old-time tunes and indie "old-time" a la Crooked Still, Outlaw Social, and the Crooked Jades.
