After recently retiring, I decided to resurrect my old banjo from my high school days. My father gave it to me and he bought it from Van Eps. I was born and raised in Plainfield, NJ and I think Van Eps either lived or worked there at one time. He originally told me that they were the Van Eps twins and they played on the vaudeville circuit.
The banjo is a 17 fret tenor and it originally had a hole in the head. It has all of the mother of pearl inlaid(Star and the diamonds on the fretboard. I'm about to get it refurbished, but I don't want to destroy the original integrity of the instrument. It has the aluminum resonator and right now it does not have a head on it(one of the items to be replaced). There was some discussion about the frets being flush. I'm not sure how to tell the difference.
I have no idea what this is worth, but since it's about 100 years old, I assume that it might be quite valuable. I'd love to have an idea of the value. I have no intention of selling it, but I'd like to make sure I treat it properly.
Any advice would be helpful.
