Updated 02/20/26: Retired Chicago fireman. (65 years old) I played piano and keyboards in part-time rock and pop bands from 1976 to 2017 but always had a strong interest in bluegrass—especially the sound of Scruggs-style banjo. In 2018, I bought an Oscar Schmidt beginner banjo and took a few in-person lessons with a local teacher. After just five sessions, I was hooked. Within four months of learning to wear the picks, I upgraded to a new Hatfield Buck Creek. Today, I continue learning through two online courses, occasional face-to-face lessons with a local pro, bluegrass ensemble classes, and jam sessions. During the pandemic, I got my wife back into playing guitar, and with the help of Strum Machine, we now jam on about forty bluegrass standards together. Best banjo story: picking up my Buck Creek on Burton Ridge Road—and becoming friends with Arthur Hatfield.
