My Instruments:
I am currently building a series of 9 Pau Ferro, Ebony and brass banjo ukuleles with 10" block rims. I decided to bolt the neck to the rim with 1/4" stainless bolts using a 1/2" brass co-ordinator rod as one of the fasteners. The sound and sustain are very good. The banjo and other instrumentsare on my website at www.wicklandinstruments.com
A 2017 update. My current favorite banjo has a thin block rim made from Bolivian rosewood and a two piece neck in the same material. The tone ring is a Rickard raw brass Dobson and this combination of thin rosewood and Dobson makes for a rich full sound. The instrument rings. I have also been building polished rosewood moon bridges and a simple brass capo for the 5th string.

I have been a woodworker all my life. I have built houses, docks, a couple of pile drivers, run a water taxi, kept sheep and supervised heavy construction. I like building banjos and Bill Rickard has been and is a great source of information, technique and inspiration. His warning that you can not build just one banjo is true and i am starting #60. My current favorite banjo has a thin block rim made from Bolivian rosewood and a two piece neck, the same material. The tone ring is a Rickard raw brass Dobson and this combination of thin rosewood and Dobson makes for a rich full sound.
