I work with ABC notation and to a lesser extent TablEdit to provide a lingua franca for our varied circle of players. We have "air" players with great ears and steeped in a lot of listening to recordings and years of playing, while we also have people who just like to play but are note readers and not so familiar with many traditional tunes. Clawhammer Banjo is the first instrument I have approached as a melodic instrument and it has opened the floodgates for me. My Deering is usually in Double-D and my long-neck is usually in std. G. And my nail is always worn to a nub. When it gets too short I am forced to use a Fred Kelly delrin or a brass propik fingerpick. Both have been subjected to much modification and still they are last resorts.
