Playing with two drum machines in a brief case mounted to a cymbal stand, the Salt Lake Whalefishers don’t abide by any conventional standards. Entrusted with amplified acoustic instruments, the two man band jiggle strings on their tenor banjo and guitar in genres from Irish and gypsy folk, to rock and rap. Always clever and unabashed, the Whalefishers ridiculous lyrics and rhythmic melodies give even the horribly uncoordinated a need to dance. The Salt Lake Whalefishers are Nick Larson on Tenor Banjo/Vocals, Jared Thompson on Acoustic Guitar/Vocals, and two drum machines, who are not called anything, as bass and drums. Jared and Nick first met in 1999 and helped form the punk band Frankensystem playing guitar and bass.The band broke up in 2002 and Nick decided to learn the tenor banjo. In 2006, Jared tried to start another punk band, but instead, Nick coerced him into playing goofy folk songs about drinking beer and marital problems. They are influenced by beautiful nude statues, outdoor expos, and anything that makes them laugh, fall down, or cry.....from laughing. Musically they are influenced by the Beatles, The Pogues, NOFX, and Eric Idle. Exploding in to the dive-bar live music scene, like a hot sauce packet taped to a firecracker, the Whalefishers have played several venues around Salt Lake since 2010 including Burt’s Tiki Lounge, The Dawg Pound, The Woodshed, and Liquid Joes. Their 13 song album called “The Foggy Bitch” was recorded by the two untrained audio technicians over the span of 8 months in the undisclosed “Whalefishers HQ”. They are currently seeking new venues around Salt Lake to play, in hopes of expanding their fan base beyond the unwanted ex-girlfriends and hobos that currently populate their fan base. Some interesting facts about the band: All their shows are played live. Neither band member has lost an appendage. When their parents fight, they both hold firm to a neutral stance. Notable lyrics include: “The computer is not my friend, 'cause it can’t keep a secret”, and “I never read the Bible to the end, 'cause the main character dies”.
