Having a "head" problem

From Papasims on 10/8/2013 7:06:43 PM

No, not my banjo.  Can't get the clawhammer sound out of my head.  I bought a new Wildwood Troubador, scooped and with a  band, in September and can't put the thing down.  Great sound, looks, etc.

My 3 finger pickin' wasn't going anywhere and I've been playing mando for the past 7 years.  I was evidently watching the wrong videos on YouTube and get caught up with the clawhammer influence.  Best thing that has happened to me.  Putting the mando to the side for a while....lots of tunes to learn.

Congratulations! Sounds like you've got yourself a real nice banjo and clear cut case of clawhammer fever.

I can relate. Drove 2.5 hours each way to pick up my Troubadour yesterday and I'm really digging it. Clawhammer will take a while after fingerpicking guitar for the past few years and playing 3-finger banjo ages ago. But the banjo sounds great and provides loads of inspiration.

I was working on a drop thumb number today and I automatically came "UP" with my middle finger the first few times. I've been watching a lot of Patrick Costello and Cathy Fink that have really helped with getting started. I have a decent ear for tunes but does anyone else have musicians/videos etc. that you have used to get you started? Mainly I just sit and noodle a lot, some tunes come out on their own.

Try to find some video of Doc Watson playing clawhammer style banjo. Doc had a very clean, steady, fairly straight ahead, but rock solid style. It's a good place to start. . . or finish for that matter.

after listening to several mp3 files and watching videos I think the Wildwood instruments stand up next to anything I've seen or heard. I know different kinds of heads would make a big difference but I'm likin' what I got. Didn't help that I put my left index finger in the router today...:(
