dating?

From damongreenaway on 6/9/2017 8:08:21 AM

Hello,

I purchased a Maple Minstrel Wildwood Banjo, like the one in an ad that was posted couple months ago. What's pretty cool, it ended up in 'small town' Ontario, Canada (I wish i knew how it got here from the West).  I was wondering if there are any ways of dating the instrument.

cool stuff, thanks for any thoughts,

dams

I do not think Mark puts serial numbers on his instruments. Both of mine do not have them. He does include a serial number on the original paperwork that comes with the instrument from the factory. I don't know how you can determine the date the banjo was made. You might contact Mark direct at Wildwood via wildwoodbanjos.com. He is great to work with and may be able to help you.

Contacting Mark directly is a great idea. Some Wildwoods are easier to date than others. For instance, the older California Wildwoods often have a brass tone hoop rather than the tu-ba-phone tone rings. Also, the 70's vintage ones don't have tension rod cover in the headstock because they have a carbon fiber non-adjustable tension rod in the neck. Mark told me that in those days he was a one-man shop and hadn't yet settled on a specific banjo line-up design. However, the models and trim were pretty much set by the time he was in Oregon.

BTW, pictures would help. I think you can see pictures of my older Wildwood on my homepage. Sean
