Weymann rims

A BHO member asked me about making a block version of a Weymann megaphone rim and piqued my interest in making one.
I don't know how Weymann made their rims -block or laminated.
I'll give it a try and keep you informed.

Good question. I looked at the rim of mine, and there are two pieces visible, with seams at 3 and 9, with the neck being 12. with the cap on the bottom, nothing else is visible, and I didn't want to disassemble it to see what might show up on the top of the rim. Hopefully someone who has disassembled one might shed some light on the subject.

I guess I should have looked at the 1928 Weymann brochure reprint first. Here is their description: The rim is constructed of ten layers of laminated wood, tapered to give a megaphonic effect. There is a photo or drawing of a cross-section of the rim; the outer wall laminations are thicker than the inner wall laminations, with the inner wall being wedge-shaped with a full height lamination covering the angled cuts. It appears that the rim was laminated and then machined so that the "megaphone" started at the top of the inside of the rim and is even with the bottom of the short rim wall that the hooks pass through. Then the cut was covered with two pieces that I described in my earlier post.
Either that, or they had a very complicated lay-up mould. I will try to scan this picture if anyone is interested.
