Greetings from a new forum-ee

From Society Hill on 12/31/2012 6:43:33 AM

Greetings from Alabama.  Years ago I owned a gold-plated JD Crowe model that I really enjoyed.  The neck seemed to be a little larger than the GSs I have now but it was a beautiful instrument to play and to look at.  I have worked my way into a 1982 Goldstar archtop (blonde maple with wreath inlays) with the 3-piece neck and book-matched resonator.  It sounds and plays great and the neck size is just right.  I also have a 1984 GF-100 mahogany that I'm working on right now.  The original neck was broken up pretty bad but I was able to find another vintage GS neck on the HangOut.  A friend of mine is about to install the "new"  one.  Also have a couple of extra GS tone rings from 1980/81 and 1986 plus some original tuners.  So for now, I'm all vintage Goldstar.

That sounds great, what ever happened to the JD?

If memory serves, I traded it in on a Gibson ESS. The Gibson was fine but I should have kept the JD. The primary thing about it was the neck size because I have small hands. It was a great instrument that I paid $1250 for in 1995 or so from Janet Davis or Elderly.

Hi and welcome. Sounds like another Gold Star fan for sure . How did you find the archtop as opposed to the gf-100. Did you find it loud and brash, any tinnyness or harshness or was it flat and dull. Did you find any volume differences between the two? Cheers, Oilerguy

Thanks! The archtop has more volume and is sharper when sounding the notes. The gf-100 has a rounder, fatter note sound and has excellent volume. When I got the G12 it had a thin bridge on it and it was a bit harsh. I changed it to a Scorpion bridge that I had and it calmed down and has a very nice tone to it. It's heavy, that's for sure. I was able to get the gf-100 put back together yesterday and am really liking how it sounds too.
