1977 G-11 H&F Archtop (I hope)

From whizfish on 12/11/2012 5:40:52 PM

Hi all,

Brand new newbie here, looking for some help. I just bought a vintage Gold Star banjo on eBay and received it today. I'm hoping for some verification that I got what I paid for. The eBay listing with pictures is still up here:

I snapped a few quickies with my iPhone here:

My main concerns are:

a) There's hardly a scratch on any of the wood. The resonator looks just about new. It isn't even dusty inside. How could this be on a 35 year old instrument? The metal parts are somewhat tarnished as expected.

b) The label in the rim is like those I've seen in photos on the internet (see my Flickr link above). It's a simple sticker with just numbers, no model indication, no Saga Instruments, etc.

What have I got here? Any advice?

Thanks,

Dan

Hey..
I've owned lots of the early goldstars and yours looks spot on.. no issues even the original case... I never had an archtop, all flatheads, so I can't comment on the sticker.. but the neck, case, resonator, tuners, metal, all are right, so I'm sure nobody swapped out the rim.. How can it have no dust you ask? Simple.. it sat in it's case for almost 35 years... I got a 100 from '78 one time... from the very first batch... looked about as good as yours... No worries there, you got the real deal... and at a pretty fair price... !

PS... that strap looks like a bummer though.. you need a good bison one for it...LOL!

Whew! Thanks, folks. I got similar "looks right to me" comments elsewhere that I've inquired. I really appreciate it, and will now turn my attention to learning the plan the damn thing.

Cheers,
Dan
p.s. Oh no, the seller forgot to send me the strap! :)

Just in case it isn't obvious, that should have said "learning to play", not "learning the plan".
Thanks again,
Dan

I'm going to sell this banjo, hopefully for what it cost me. I haven't been playing it because shortly after I got it I was invited to join a band on the mandolin, so all my time is going into getting (almost) up to speed on the mandolin. No time left for learning the banjo. And of course, I have other uses for the money.
