Serial numbers for Goldstar banjos

From Joven on 11/2/2012 10:26:01 AM

I just bought a used GF85, wow, what a well built banjo, very solid, great sound. Would anybody know when was it built?

# 070029

Thank you

Goldstars have the xx years as the first 2 numbers in the serial. So a 79 would indicate a 1979 and an 07 being from 2007

This would be one of the second batches built in China

Are you sure that the 0 is not an 8 which would indicate an '87 model. Oilerguy

They stopped production in '84 I believe. The last batches carried serial numbers of 84xxxx, 85xxxx, and 86xxxx. I have not seen one with a serial from 87 and I do not believe there are any. It is definitely a 2007

Yeah ,sometimes serial numbers get a bit blurred over time but after seeing the reissues of the Gold Star line coming out of China, I think you are right on the money . Thanks

I have a 1976 Gold Star Wreath arch top. I see owners list model numbers like GF-100 or GF-85. Is there a place on the banjo that tells the model? The only thing I find when I take the resonator off is the serial #760224.

so what are the downsides to these china made later model gf85s? got one on the line, and there was significant damage to the peghead, and i am concerned about it's innards and rim, etc. do i need to worry about banding issues, or what is the scoop? i know next to nothing about these types of deals, so any knowledge is appreciated.
