Serial Numbers...

From danielburdett on 3/15/2011 5:48:54 AM

I recently played a GF 100 HF from 1976.  The serial number on it was different from my '79.  The number was much shorter and the last two numbers were '76 instead of the first two.  What's up with that?  Does anyone know when the numbering system changed?  A side note, I told my friend that I would buy it when he was finished with it.  It sound amazing.  Playing his made me want to take my '79 and get it professionally set up!

Well, if it was a '76, it would have had to been an archtop.. at least it would have had to have left the factory as an archtop. I am friends with Richard Keldson, founder/owner of Saga/Goldstar. I have owned many old Goldstars and one of the two I currently own is a '78 flathead GF100FE. I showed it to Richard at this years IBMA show and he confirmed that it was one of the first batch of Goldstars ever to come into the country. The serial number lends itself to being #3 ever to arrive in the US, and it is most definitely a 1978. This being said, it would make it impossible for the one you saw to be an earlier flathead unless it. Hope this helps.. Kenny

I know that the guy who owns the banjo wouldn't have switched tone rings on the banjo. Maybe the shop he bought it from switched it, but I kind of doubt it because he ordered it through the music store, and I think they ordered it directly from Saga at the time my friend placed the order. That's interesting about what Richard Keldson said regarding your banjo. Based on Paul Hathorne's site, it seems that the formula used on the flatheads were changed in '78, so maybe yours is one of the first to come into the country with the new tone ring formula...
