Hello Fellow Vega Junkies

From Ronnie on 2/11/2011 6:36:56 PM

I am sure most of you play clawhammer. I am the odd ball. I  am sure many of you have heard my 1965 Scruggs/Vega  http://www.vimeo.com/1406540

My clawhammer is not "orthodox." I play "folk style" on my longnecks, sometimes with picks, sometimes without, and sometimes (heaven forbid) I'll use a flatpick. I still have my 1st Vega, a Regent, that I bought in 1962 while in college.

My own playing is pretty far from orthodox, too. Don't play fiddle tunes...I play almost exclusively songs of one type or another - blues, folky, ragtimey, rockish, traditional and original...and my playing is usually a blend of styles, with some up-picking thrown into downpicking, or strumming mixed with fingerpicking or whatever. My main banjos are a 1961 Pete Seeger Longneck, and a 1910 Fairbanks electric. (I also have fretless Dobson and several odd small sized banjos...but that's not for this group).

Out of curiosity has anyone played a 5 string Vox? Not many around. Sonny O still has the "fat banjo" and Bela has a IV 5 string he plays once in a while. A BHO member in Alaska scored a 5 string I on ebay, which may or not be a conversion from tenor or plectrum.

George Pegram played a later period Vega with a resonator. He played in a driving "pre bluegrass" style (or maybe I should say NON bluegrass because it was basically old-time & he was not going to ever "evolve" it to bluegrass).
