Chuck, Welcome, this is one of the reasons for this group, it's purty new, so hopefully you can find your self a banjo teacher here. It depends on whether you want to pay for lessons or have a friend help you out or do both. I only know of one banjo teacher so far personally in the area, though there are probably quite a few. Music World in Hazell Dell has a banjo teacher if you are interested in going that route, you could also inquire at the Music World in Battle Ground too. One advantage of doing that is that is they will help keep you away from bad habits, something that I will say it's probably too late for me. The style I play isn't Bluegrass although I do play Bluegrass songs, gospel and other. My style is Old Time 3 finger and it's something that just came naturally. I don't really know how I would be able to pass on or teach the technique I use as it is different. Traditional Scruggs style picking is purty teachable so thats the way to go if it's bluegrass your mainly interested in.
If you like Gold Tone, check with Banjo-Man-Dan as he is the local Gold Tone Dealer. I have mainly stumbled across most of my banjo's used, only one I bought new and that was the most basic Deering Goodtime openback. I have no complaints with that instrument.

Chuck, I tried posting this once, but didn't see it come up so we're trying it again, so just in case you see this twice.
Welcome, and this is one of the reasons for this group so you might be able to connect with a teacher or someone to help you out here in the area.
This group is still purty new, and hopefully it'll gather some steam enough for banjo players in the Vancouver area to connect like that.
I do know personally of one banjo teacher locally here, he teaches at Music World in Hazell Dell, so you could check him out. There is the Music World in Battle Ground as well and they could probably hook you up with him. The advantage of going that route is you will be actively steered away from bad habits and that is a big plus. I didn't learn from a teacher and my style is Old time 3 finger and it's something that just came naturally and would be difficult to methodically teach. Scruggs style picking is a well proven, teachable picking style so if it's Bluegrass your interested in, it's the way to go.
On a picking a banjo, if you like Gold Tone, Banjo-Man-Dan is the local dealer in the area so I'm sure he could help you out there. I have basically stumbled on to the banjo's I have, all used, except for one new one, the most basic Deering Goodtime open back. I have no complaints with that instrument, it's the one I use the most.

Thank you for the welcome and advice, I will check out your suggested sites. Try to keep you posted on my progress at 58 kind of a late start, but I've heard of people starting later in life thn. It's purely for the pleasure of the music, takes me back to my youth in the Carolina's, Virginia and Louisiana. Thanks again.

Hi Chuck,
Looks like we are the same age. It's a great time to take up the banjo. I enjoy the heck out of learning new things everyday. I have only been back playing for a couple years.
We are so lucky in the Northwest to have lots of BG festivals and performances. I love going and hearing great music, seeing friends, meeting new folk and getting a little jamming in. Maybe I'll see you at one soon!

Was wondering if anyone knows of a good setup man in the area. The local stores don't seem to have a tech. that or knows how to set a banjo up. Was hoping to find preferably a banjo playing tech. I have a 1978 Washburn B14 and I know how to and have it set up to play. But would like a profesional to look at it,make neck adjustments if needed and what ever. Let me know if you do. "money is only money, but a banjo is a BANJO!"
