Just joined the group and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a 39-year-old banjo newbie. I've been playing electric guitar, to a very basic standard!, since my teens. A few years ago I discovered the mountain dulcimer, which I play in the traditional 'noter-drone' style. This has introduced me to two things: American old-time music, and the pleasures of being able to pick up an instrument and actually play a tune on it, as opposed to strumming away at chords.
Banjo seemed like a logical next step - a chance to build on existing left-hand skills from my guitar playing, while still playing unaccompanied tunes. I just bought myself a Recording King OT25 and have started working my way through Ken Perlman's Clawhammer Banjo book and DVDs.
In terms of my musical tastes, I'm coming from a background of pop/rock, and the pop/rock end of folk I guess. The old-time/bluegrass tradition is pretty alien to me and within it, it's the darker or more melancholy tunes that appeal to me most - Pretty Saro, the Blackest Crow, Shady Grove, Pretty Polly, Cold Frosty Morning.
