Is there an art to strumming back up when using a metal pick I've got both metal (Dunlop) and plastic picks but I prefer the sound of the metal, although strumming back up seems easier with a plastic pick.

If your learning 3finger bluegrass picking this really shouldn't be a consern at one week in. You need to be studying the rolls, without them you,ll never play right. Back up is vamped, I never heard of a full on strum , but perhaps one of my teaching partners can enlighten me more.

Thanks Joe I have been learning my forward Roll this week along with the intro to Duelling Banjos a tab from happybanjodude on youtube.

Use all of the pick (or as much as you can )when playing the up strum don't try to play the strings to hard

I haven't joe no I work away from home during the week and my connection a 3G will not be fast enough mate .

alan, it sounds to me like you need to reseach this style of playing much more. forums etc are only helpful so far!!. if you could possibly take advantage of the offer of joemac (skype) or any other of the offers of help on here. you will be at least heading down the right track! you are so lucky to be offered this help (for free)! i wish i had had it when i first started. get some help mate, or i fear that in the coming months, the're will be a new post in the classifieds! Is dueling banjo not a bluegrass style ? ( the tab I have for it there are 3 strums in the intro part) .
Today I will be changing motel rooms (i work away from home during the week)to where I can receive wi-fi which will allow me to take advantage of lessons with Joe through Skype .
The banjo I purchased was recommended by a fair few members on here including Joe .
The banjo mute again came highly recommended from a few other members I know there not for everyone but for staying in a motel during the week it is a necessity .
To me I was sure I had been following advice and I'm very gratefull to receive it not being the shapest tool in the box if there is something you think i've missed could you point out lol
I'd like to thank each member for taking the time to comment on my posts.

Ok, Brumski is right, you need to carry out learning all the techniques ness. To even get you ready for a tune like that, it takes a good amount of time to underpin the basics to a degree that you can perform them without thinking. Holding the instrument correctly, adopting the correct hand position, how to position the picks, what thickness of pick to choose, how long and wide to have the thumb pick shaft, how the tuning works, roll patterns, all learned and played cleanly, over and over agin, what the name of each roll pattern means, how to place the first two basic chords down cleanly every time , how to chord and roll so that each string sounds crystal clear. Then learning the basic tunes like cripple creek to teach you how to slide a string and chord and roll all at once, then learn to pull off and hammer on the strings by a tune called Old Joe Clark and so it starts with all the right ingredients in place. If you carry on learning dealing banjos as you are, well the banjo may well end up in the corner of your room. Sorry to appear so blunt but that's it, plain and simple. Go onto the video page and check out John Bouldins video serie, "lick of the week". He starts you off from the very beginning, have a look.

Alan! Making mistakes in the first six weeks will take 6months to put right and with some beginners it's never fixed.
get a Tutor! Make the effort to find one and if need be Travel to learn with the best. if its worth doing it's worth doing well.

My point is right here alan writing on this site can't convey what you need to learn. you'd be better of spending time looking through Utube recordings but when you have a problem you need that mentor in a one to one to explain till you get it right. Don't worry the first twenty years are the worst!

by the way, a very warm welcome to the forum alan, i hope you manage to grasp the "building blocks" of the bluegrass picking style. try to get to a couple of festivals if you can a list of uk ones can be found on "ukbluegrass" forum, don't be in any rush!! it's a loooong journey you have embarked upon!! there are some great people on here, and there's great fun to be had!!
