Has anyone tried??

From will1976 on 2/6/2013 6:19:55 AM

Has anyone tried to learn clawhammer by using

The How and Tao of Old Time Banjo  by Patrick Costello

This is written by Patrick Costello. I have downloaded a copy, (which by the way is free). I was just wondering if anybody has made any good progress by using this method only?

I look forward to your responses & happy picking.

About a hundred years ago I started with Scruggs style playing but failed to get a tune out of it. Last year I happened across Pat's website and have been hooked ever since. I think it is a good place to start frailing and, as you say, all free. Good luck.

Hi Will1976
Pat Costello has some great videos out there on YouTube. One can learn a lot from them. Watching the early ones helped me understand the bum-di-ty stroke, for example. He has a couple of free books out there, too. He is truly a banjoist one should thank and appreciate.
There came a time, however, when I realized that there was more to old time banjo than just bum-di-ty strumming. Just as there is more to the guitar than being a folk singers back up instrument.
It all comes down to what you want from your instrument, what you want it to do for you and what you want to do with it. If you want you and your banjo to be able to do more than accompaniment strumming (not that there is anything wrong with that: wish I had the voice and talent for it) then maybe you should check out Rocket Science Banjo, which I think you may know. This has a free download booklet, too. Tony has a few videos on YouTube as well, though not nearly as many as Patrick.
Good luck with the style you choose and happy picking - Steve (dan-ban)
