Two Finger Picking...

From Richard Pickstock on 1/26/2014 8:35:10 AM

I've been playing the banjo for 3 years now and all the songs I play, I only use my thumb and index finger. I don't consider this as a problem as I can still achieve my goals I set out for myself but I think it would be helpful if I got into the habit of using my middle finger whilst picking. The reason for this is that I want to learn Scruggs style which would be difficult without the middle finger. However, using just my thumb and index finger has slowly made me better at the banjo as I'm creating my own playing styles and songs due to this playing method.

I also use thumb and middle finger for 2-finger picking because I also play 3-finger style, as you suggest.

Have you got any good exercises for the 3-finger style abarten?...

Various finger rolls. You can find them in most banjo how-to books as well as online. Learn to play slow and steady before worrying about speed. Also, learn to play quietly. I'm down to three basic finger rolls: Forward, forward-back, and alternating thumb.

Right hand exercises include hammering and pulling off in every combination on all four main strings, plus slides.

You guys are aware that there is a forum and vast resources for 3-finger picking here on the hangout, right?

I'll check out that forum chip, and cheers abarten!
