I'm 71 and brand new at the banjo. My only previous experience has been the last 31/2 years learning the uke. I jam with a group of up to 10 people who play uke, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and autoharp. We have a few good singers.The repertoire is quite eclectic ranging from The Band to the Grateful Dead to Allison Krause to The Carter Family.

I've explored several banjo playing styles. I seem quite comfortable with 2 finger index lead and would like to go further with this technique. My long term goal is to reach a passable level of competence that will allow me to play some solos in public and complete old-time songs in private.

My short term goal is to learn some basic 2 finger index lead patterns that I can play over chords to accompany the group.

Any help out there?

bart_brush says: 1/21/2014 10:42:31 AM This may be in Chip's video, but my two cents worth is: Devote 15 minutes a day to playing the 3-4 basic right hand picking patterns over and over while fingering various chords with your left hand. No songs, just the patterns. Then move on to songs after the 15 minutes is up. And be aware that some songs seem to be made for beginners, and others are much more complex.
	IamNoMan says: 11/17/2014 12:07:55 AM Learn some George Formby Finger patterns if you don't know them already from the Ukulele. The Split Stroke and Fan Stroke are particularly useful on 5 string banjo, Tenor too!
