For those in the know - right banjo?

Guys I know there is probably no right or wrong answer but is a recording king rk85-sn with a mastertone type tone ring which I believe it has a good banjo for 2 finger picking, perhaps moving up to three finger picking? I love dock boggs and singers like him, and would like to get a similar sound but want the right kit to do it with. My RK is beautiful but I have been toying with the Ida about trading it in for a long neck with a WL tone ring.... Just don't have the experience or knowledge to make a decision without some guidance.

Chasing a particular sound is like searching for the Holy Grail, particularly with older recordings. Your banjo is fine for 2 or 3 finger including scruggs. Take off the resonator and make a few adjustments - perhaps a new head - and you could even use it for clawhammer. I wasted many years trying to find the perfect sound and never did. I set my banjos up now to suit me and ignore all the hype on tone rings, wood types etc Happy picking Tony
	mojo_monk says: 6/18/2013 6:43:11 AM Experiment with picking at varying distances from the bridge. The closer you get, the crisper the sound - the closer to the neck, the muddier the sound. A particular banjo has more than just ONE sound!
	dysuldalleth says: 6/18/2013 6:50:19 AM All good advice thank you. I'm lucky enough to have a decent open back as well as the RK. I have just put a new higher bridge on the RK as the action was very low and its made picking a bit easier without finger picks. I'm just going to sit down and enjoy playing instead of rushing around trying to get the perfect set up without being able to play properly first. Just experimenting with 3 finger and two finger old time stuff.
