2 finger + clawhammer

From japus on 1/19/2013 8:24:49 PM

Playing old time, civil war, and gospel for many years, not to good but possibly passable..I play often with my wife and her dulcimer, often changing between styles I am not even sure have a name.

I have picks and on occasion use them for 3 finger rolls, however I always come back to clawhammer which seems natural for me, especially if I know or like the tune..

I play shortin bread in DD tuning, using 2 fingers, then changing over to clawhammer..I enjoy the change and from my point of view it's exciting.

Recently watched a video on you tube when Michael Neverisky played Sweet Sunny South.  In my opinion he did one fantastic job of 2 finger first, then clawhammer for an excellent video.

Now the kicker, I'd sure love to know what iin the world I am doing...there are times when I'm not able to  put strings together to sound right, when I strike the 1st string what comes next ?..suppose what I am meaning is  I need some help as to what to do....

Please hurry as "I'm getting old and feeble and I cannot work no more"

Sorry that all I can offer is a 'comment', no instructional information. Playing both two-finger and clawhammer styles, enjoying what you're playing and being part of a family musical group would seem to me to be just about the perfect set up. I envy you!

Sounds like you're doing just fine! I'd love to see a video or even a sound file of your 2-finger picking.

I can think of three sources right now. The first is Art Rosenbaum's "Old Time Mountain Banjo" book (hard to find and usually very expensive). More accessible is Sean Barth's site: "Thumb Lead Banjer", with lots of tabs and tips. Third is a video by Chris Berry demonstrating two-finger techniques.
