Banjoduffer Kentucky Drop Thumb

From Banjoduffer on 11/11/2012 12:49:04 PM

I have been watching Beginner video's by Tony C. Thomas. He plays something call Kentucky Drop Thumb style. It is a two finger style but there are pinches as a part of the rhythm. Anyone familiar with the style and suggestions on sources of other info?.

Not familiar with that style but pinches are used in most two finger up picking styles. Thanks for the tip i will check it out. No other sources other than the ones i have already mentioned.

Thanks for the comment. You can get the web site at TonyCthomas.com. Tony bills himself as an old time player and he has a series of youtube videos. These are basic techniques with some melody notes included. Sine I am at a skill level that need some teacing in basics I fond the video's helpful even tough I know some of the materials. I He is definitely Appalachian in his approach and I enjoy his un embellished approach. He also talks about using the plectrum and cross picking to get a somewhat Bluegrass sound.

I stumbled onto his videos one day while surfing. Watched a couple. He spent most of the 2 that I watched talking about how easy barre chords made things but no time at all talking about what his right hand was doing. I wasnt able to come even close to figuring it out so I abandoned the rest of the videos and moved on. Does he actually discuss right hand technique in some of the videos? Sadly I use dial up interenet and it takes roughly forever to download a video so when I find one that doesnt have a decent description of what it contains I tend to be quick to lose interest

He shows use of finger picks on two finger, what he calls Kentucky Drop Thumb but does not get into the ril patterns. He also offers Plectrum picking as a method of getting a somewhat Bluegrass out of the banjo. He call his playing "Old Time" and predates to be the early playing such as was done by minstrels. He does a bit of showing notes but does not get much into how it is being done. He talks about how some find it difficult to follow tab and master three finger style, so he is offing some metods to the beginner and encourages them to practice and move ahead as they become more accomplisshed. I am picking up some new ideas but sonce I know most all the chords I don't always use the bar choeds he does.
