Have been trying to learn some clawhammer, but keep falling back into 2-finger thumb lead, which seems most natural to me. Only problem is, I think the melody notes picked with the back of the nail are much clearer, cleaner and "prettier" than the ones I pick with my thumb, unless I really crook that sucker and try to get a little nail on the string. Any ideas?

	chip arnold says: 3/8/2011 12:26:17 PM i've used my thumb and fingernail for years. now it's getting harder to maintain and so i'm working on using picks. lots of old time pickers used picks. depends on the sound you want. i also like the more mello tone produced with what J. Roy Stalcup, an early mentor of mine called nekkid fingers.
	elmangle says: 3/8/2011 1:14:28 PM Thanks, guys. I can use picks O.K. 'cause I used them a lot for guitar, but I, too, like that "nekkid finger" sound - usually. Actually the sound I'm getting is suitable for some tunes, being sort of a "pop" instead of a "ring", but for those sweet old tones it's a little harsh.
