About ten years ago, my friend Mike's wife, Pat, threw him a surprise party for his 50th. Maggie and I arrived first with our pot luck and Pat said, "Mike's up in the attic Jim, go on up." Mike has an amazing HO layout in his attic and I went up and we ran the trains for a while, then grabbed the guitar that Mike keeps in the train room and started playing train songs. We passed the guitar back and forth till Bob, from across the street came over. Bob joined us and we passed the guitar in a circle, singing train songs. A bit later David and then Aengus showed up and joined us. The songs included:
Big Steel Rails,
Going Away,
Southbound Freight,
Slow Train Through Georgia,
Georgia On A Fast Train,
Georgia Railroad,
Glendale Train,
Cross Ties On A Railroad,
Jesse James,
Train Yards,
Hobo's Lullaby,
Trains Don't Stop In Kingston Prison,
Folsom Prison
...
and either David or Aengus did Gord Lightfoot's Canadian RR Trilogy
We went on for a long time without repeating any songs and didn't even get to Wabash Cannonball or Freight Train. I don't know when Mike figured out that it was a party, but by the time we were called downstairs, we'd decided to do a show of train songs at the library.
