My Father worked for the New York, New Haven and Hartford RR In the 50's and later for the New York Central. He was a senior systems analyst.
One of the perks of the job was free railway travel for the family. When I went to college, I made use of that. Since I went to college in Wisconsin, it meant a long journey back to either Buffalo or New York City from Chicago.
On one trip, the train went the northern route, through Canada over Lake Erie. We got stuck in a snowstorm. We were treated to free meals in the dining car, coffee and desert included. It could have been a nightmare, except most of the other passengers were sailors from Great Lakes Naval base heading home for Christmas! Although it got pretty cold, we all kept nice and warm. LOL!
