My husband came home with a book he got at a thrift shop for a dime....big spender!
The book is "The Historical Guide to North American Railroads compiled by Deorge H. Drury, Librarian for Trains Magazine. Published in 1985, 1988. Kalmbach Publishing Co. 1027 North Seventh Street, Milwaukee, WI 53233. ISBN 0-89024-072-8.
It is the Histories, figures, and features of more than 160 railroads abandoned or merged since 1930.
WOW! Hubby said, "I thought I'd give it to Don for him to sell." DUH! That would be grounds for divorce.
This is a treasure of a book, as there are lots of pictures of old trains, the variety of locomotives is mind boggling, As well as the history of each, there is a list of statistics that includes number of locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, company service cars, Miles of track, and location of headquarters. Usually there is a picture of the company's logo as well.
This is definitely a reference book for any one interested in trains. I don't know if it has been reprinted since 1988, but well worth looking into.
My copy is in poor shape and falling apart. It is a softcover, about 5 1/2 x 8 - the shorter dimension being the spine.
Original cost was $20.95.
So if you see one grab it, although I think you will pay more than one dime for it.
