We drove into Deming NM from Tucson this morning. The UP line parallels I 10 across the deserts.

It is always enjoyable to watch them as they cross the continental divide. Some had two engines pulling and two pushing. One had three pulling and two pushing the cars.

One must have been over a mile and a half long or more. I think it is the longest train I have ever seen. Most of the cars were the containers, but there were about 6 white tankers. There are so few box cars these days out here, but there were a few in one mixed train. everything from hoppers, cattle cars, flat beds, to the ubiquitous container cars. All in all we saw about 7 freight trains.

They are working on the line west of Deming. I think they are replacing ties.

A lot to watch for.

	JohnB. says: 3/11/2011 9:26:27 PM vintagewells, I myself am a huge UP fan, when I was 12 my family drove across the country to Washington state. The only sight I wanted to see was at least one UP train. Unfortunately I was skunked though I did see a lot of BN and few C&NW trains. But when I was 17 I did see a mix of roads on a single train including a SP, UP, Conrail and one other road I cant remember here in Baltimore, MD.

	vintagewells says: 3/12/2011 7:58:02 PM Of course, it was a comfort, not an annoyance. Isn't is weird that what others find just dreadful and irritating we find comforting, and invigorating. One year we lived in an apartment about a block from the tracks with only the stock yards between us and the tracks in a small town - Maple Park, Ill. The only excitement in that town was the night a train hit one of the escaped inhabitants of the stock yard, and the night the grain elevator blew up and burned to the ground. That was about three blocks away. That was a year when a storm dumped three feet of snow on the area and our IH travelall decided to throw a blade from the fan through the hood and into a snow bank. it could have been very bad if not for the snow. No one was around and the blade could have done some real damage. ah memories.
