I dumped my SL-5 from my GF-100 because of the tonal coloring. I had harsh overtones with it resting on the Tension hoop. I see from Bill Keith and others in this group SL-5 tail pieces.

Not apl banjo's are created equal, and just because a tailpiece works with one banjo dosent mean it eill be the best choice for another one. I had a bill keith model with a price straightlinr, and i have a banjo that i buily that has the goldtone sl-5 on it , ajd the one i built has overtone issues with that tailpeice, but the keith model dosent. I also have another toptension banjo made of misc. Vintage gibson parts that has a bearclaw tailpeice, one of the old original ones, and i have tried changing it to several other tailpeices but it sounds better eith the bear claw, however i used to have an earl scruggs standard that i tried the bear claw on, and it sounded better with the presto that came on it, so you see , it just depends on the banjo. Every one is different

I certainly agree with the experience of Tailpieces being unique. On my GF-100 I went to a Fultz 1934. The Fultz corrected the overtones from the SL-5. I am thinking about using the SL-5 on my RB-12. I looking for more reasons than changing. I like the current sound. I just got it so I am not apt to change. The reason I got the SL-5 is because the Presto on by GF-100 broke. It was an imitation. I noticed on my RB-12 that a real presto does not rest on but against the tension hoop.
In addition, the setup on the head is nearly flush with the tenstion hoop. This does not lend itself with using the SL-5. Thank you for the comment.

You might want to think about changing the head on the rb-12 if it is nearly flush. There is another one of thise things that is different from onre banjo to another . I like a medium crown head, but i have one banjo that i have to use a low crown head on because a medium crown will go almost flush before the tension gets right, but you should have some reveal on the hoop and if you dont, then you need a lower crown. If you have a high crown , try a medium

Good call. I suffered 15 years with stock high crown on my GF-100. I bought it new. I could never get the tension right on it. Went to a low crown and was able get it sounding pretty sweet. I think this RB-12 has a medium. This is a stock Remo head. I am enjoying this RB-12.

Top tensions are like a drug , you either hate them , or you get addicted and you cant quit playing them
