My dream banjo

From saw_woods on 11/6/2021 1:38:18 PM

For some time now, I have had a growing desire to find myself a walnut, top-tension banjo.  At this point it is an irrational desire.  However it's time to pursue it, at least as far as soliciting input from others with more experience.  What do you like about your instrument?  Is there anything you dislike?  Would you do it again?

Hello,

I bought on BHO a 2005 Gibson RB-12 5 years ago. This was an untouched banjo bought from a failed musical instrument store in North Carolina. That was exactly what I was looking for.

I and my wife enjoy its sound. I have modified it and kept its original parts of tailpiece and tuners.

What I found irritating is how Gibson used a straight nut over a 12” radius fret. My first three frets were pitted and gouged. I refret the banjo to 7.25” with EVO frets. And I replaced the straight nut with a 7.25 radius nut. I use Tim Purcell bridges with 7.25” radius. I have a Little Mountain armrest and Fults tailpiece.

Now, the banjo plays very well. It can ring like a bell and growl with a open 4th.

I have a really nice handmade Walnut Top Tension I could sell. It was built by Gary Carter using the Siminoff book. Let me know if you are interested.
