Hello and welcome

From beetlegeist on 5/29/2011 5:46:47 AM

Hello and welcome to the tenor banjo group.  You are one of the few!  Lets make this a premier group dedicated to the tenor banjo or tango as I like to call it.  This group welcomes all styles of playing.  It is here to share knowledge, to offer encouragement and help broaden all the music aspects of this famous but under rated banjo, and remember to feel free to post your own comments and topics.  This is your place!

This could be a lot of fun!
I play the tenor and enjoy it. You can see many videos of me on YouTube if you search for me there: Steve Caddick

Hello banjopa and welcome. I have just watched your video The Stell Bert Rag on You Tube. I could listen to that tune all day. You sure know how to play the tenor banjo and I am glad you are here. Welcome in!

Thanks, call me Steve. My Dad wrote that song with a friend in the 1930's. Stell was his friend's wife Estelle and Bert was my Mom Bertha, they named the song after them. I love playing it.

I love listening to it. It is a great tune and I am glad to know a little about the history of it. There is a magic to the tenor banjo. I am not sure what it is but it makes a good feeling in people. - Kester

I guess that is why I don't drink. This is my drug....tenor banjo!

Now that is funny. When ever I am asked to describe the tenor I always say it is addictive. I think it is because it is a simple and small instrument but can do so much. It does make me feel happy to play or just to listen to it.

Thanks guys :)

I've started researching Banjo types and tutor material. I've a limited budget to start, but would still like to get something that'll get me through the 'beginner' stages as i save up more money to get a really nice one :)

Deering makes a series of banjos called Goodtime that fits most any budget. From entry level to Pro models. I have played on a couple and they are fairly decent. But, My favorite is a vintage Vega tubaphone. The Vega Whtye Laydie is also a great banjo.

I do agree with you. Start with a Deering banjo. Before I bought mine I had a cheap banjo which was unplayable. I love my Deering and it comes with a tone ring which is pretty good for an open back banjo.

Any suggestions on what string gauge to use on a 17 fret short scale neck fitted to an 11" pot? Bought an old tenor and I'm fixing her up a bit. I would like to use the jazz tuning for it instead of the Irish tuning.

I also play on a 17 fret banjo and I use .030, .023w, .016 and .009 nickel wound strings. Does that help?

banjopa says:

Sons, I think for a 17 fretter, those may be a bit on the light side. I would go with .032w, .024w, .016 should be fine and at least a .010 or a .011

I will change my strings soon and will try those new sizes. I sometimes feel as though light strings were not quite right. I will let you know how things will go.

gives me a good starting point. I think I'm going to have to go with guitar string in that guage. The music store in my town is terrible. Thanks guys ... also, what do you think about setting it up with renaissance head?

banjopa says:

I have one on my Vega Pro tenor and love it.

Does this look any good fella's?

It's on sale here locally (Aus).

Looks like an entry level banjo with 19 frets, so it is a tenor. Looks clean and brand new.

Geekmason says:
6/28/2011 5:43:12 PM

Would using a Capo on the 2nd fret make it exactly the same as a 17 Fret tenor?

banjopa says:
6/28/2011 5:52:54 PM

Not exactly, you tune a 17 fret tenor to the same pitches as a 19 fretter. By capoing at the 2nd fret, you change the base tuning to D,A,e,b. Still in 5ths but a whole tone higher in pitch on each string.
