Hello. I'm Jer, and I've kind of stumbled into Swedish music from a bit of a bluegrassy perspective.
My exposure is from the likes of Vasen's work with Mike Marshall and Darol Anger, and from Sandra Wong's stuff. So kind of taking an American perspective on things.
When I got the new Punch Brothers album (more American influence!), I was taken by their cover of Vasen's Flippen, and went away and worked that out.
And then some friends had a bit of a Swedish jam session a few days ago, and I played along - on guitar then, but again that was a whole new learning experience, as my standard bum-chick bluegrass style guitar playing really wouldn't fit in this stuff.
It's all very exciting. Lots of funky new rhythms and stylistic stuff to get my teeth into.
I'm coming at it from a 3-finger style of playing, but obviously now I also want to learn nyckelharpa!
Ooh! Now there's a thought, has anybody ever considered trying to build a nyckelbanja??!!!
Take care,
Jer
