Why Sullivan over all the other banjo brands out there?
I hadn't heard of Sullivan banjos. I had heard of FQMS, and I drove down to Louisville from Cincinnati to visit the store and see what sort of banjos they had in stock. I saw and played some nice Gibsons, Stellings and Sullivans, sitting in the vault for a couple of hours picking away. (Bill popped his head through the door and complimented my playing.)
Gibson and Stelling make top notch banjos. Very different - you either like the Gibson or the Stelling sound, right? Well as I was picking away I found I actually preferred the Sullivan sound. Warm, balanced, nice sustain. And a very slim and comfortable neck. Pretty too with the curly maple and pearl inlay......
I came home and started mulling it over. Do I want a good quality banjo? Those Sullivans are really nice..... A couple of months later I went back and repeated the process, playing various banjos back to back, The Greenbrier won out in the end. It's the sound! I bought my banjo that day.
