70's $100 Kit Banjos?

From Tim Sander on 2/7/2013 1:54:57 PM

How many (if any) others of you built one of the first kit banjos Stew Mac offered for $100?  Does anyone still have the instructions that came with the kit?

I'm working on a couple of late 70's Stew Mac mahogany necks with ebony fingerboards that I've had as a project since way back then.  They'll be paired with a couple of 70's flathead Stew Mac (same as Gibson Earl Scruggs) tone rings on Dan Pennington Rims eventually.

I have Stew Mac assembly instructions for "The Eagle Standard." The copyright date says 1983, but maybe they will be useful. I've posted them for download at the following site:

temp-share.com

Let me know if the pictures are too dark and I will copy by other means, or if I can help in any other way.

Thanks!

Thanks. That's the instructions for the later models. It's interesting and useful, but not quite what I was thinking of.
Mine and others like it had a simpler peghead shape, a cast aluminum arch top rim and tone ring combination. Those that I'm working on now are more like this one, sans resonator.

What is the current value of one of the basic 5-string Stew Mac banjos (Aluminum-ODE archtop rim), from the 60's?
Great sounding banjo, but I have a couple of other great sounding banjos and would like to see if I could find a home for.

Are you still looking for those instructions tsander? If so, I'll do a little digging. I have what I recall being a basic 5-string open back Eagle that I bought and built probably around 1980 or so. I was in a BIG hurry to get it assembled to play, so there are some places where one was supposed to do a lot more wood finishing where I just didn't. The neck is pretty chunky still, and I never did the inlay. I have the inlay pieces and the instructions, and could make an effort to uncover them if you still need them.

Oh, and BTW my recollection is that I paid $125 for the kit. From Herb David's Guitar back when it was upstairs on State Street in Ann Arbor. I vaguely recall debating with myself whether to spend slightly more money for a slightly fancier kit. But I cannot remember what the difference was between the kits, or whether I did pay extra. So there might have been a $100 kit and I went with something with better pegs or something...

Yes, I'd still like to obtain a copy of the original manual or instructions for the 70's version of the kit. Mine has the ODE style cast aluminum arch top rim and simpler peg head shape (more rectangular). Pics of it on my BHO page. I recall paying around that same price for mine. It was in the $100 range. I later upgraded the tuners and did fancy inlay on it.

As for it's current value, I had considered posting it for sale at one point for about $800 on BHO, but can't part with it after so many years.

I may have the instructions you are looking for. I will check when I get home.

Thanks, that would be great, "maconrad".
