My StewMac's

From Diamond Eagle on 1/31/2011 1:06:06 PM

I have a couple of StewMac's one is an Eagle open back that was my mother's, now my daughter's, and a Diamond Eagle with Flying Eagle inlays. I had the Mastertone block engraved Eagle and there's no maker on the peghead. I just rearranged the inlays a bit to fill in. I built the DE in the late 80's and did the inlay work myself. It's been my primary banjo ever since even though I took a number of years off. I'll be getting pictures up eventually. I've recently been tweaking mine to get a better sound and have had a lot of luck.

My current setup is a 5 Star non-frosted top, loose tone ring fit, adjustable presto tailpiece with no down pressure, and a 5/8ths Beaver King bridge with 3rd string compensation. I have a Waverly planetary 5 string tuner and 4 Keith D Tuners and am running GHS Crowe Stage strings. I adjusted the tone ring just yesterday. Originally it was a tight fit. When I pulled it apart I found that the fit was loose now, but it was sitting on the skirt, not the upper inner part of the ring. I fixed that and it has a lot better lower tone now, more open and a bit growly.

My Mom's is the Eagle open back with the aluminum put archtop. It has the round position markers with the star on the peghead. My daughter has been playing and had the head signed by the guys of Northern Departure, a local Bluegrass band of young talented players. It's kind of cool because it's the original head with Eagle on it. No plans for this one, it's too cool the way it is.

Feel free to chime in!

Bruce
