ok! here goes, just been trying to play for about 8 months and still just getting the rolls down , and one song boil them cabbage down, and not fast, but my wife said she can hear it coming on , but i read about others beginners and wow , progess seems so fast , i am wish and a picking dt

Don't try to force it. The banjo is not one of those instruments that you can learn over nite.
If you keep woring at it one day you will say WOW!! I nailed that one. Let it be natural.
I have been working at it for over a year and I can only play Cripple Creek and Dueling Banjo.
Are you learning by tab or ear? I started by tab and hit a brick wall then I changed to ear and am having better luck with it. Murphey Method DVD's work wonders. Don't get dishearten enjoy it and have fun.

Ya keep a picking away and be sure to explore new things . I have been playing for like 15 months and self taught person . Here's my story and it might not be right to some but it worked for me .I started playing songs by strumming and adding chord changes to get a feel of making a song . Then i started playing tabulature like boil the cabage down then went after songs i knew and wanted to learn so learned dixie , year of jubilo, and red river valley and dueling banjos first half part , for me tabulature is a very hard and long slow process to get down so focused more on doing roll patterns and chord changes using short (cheeter chords ) so i could do chord changes fast and clear without 4 or 5 fingers going some where at once and more like 2 or three which was tons simpler for me to do . The roll i started doing was kinda a fwd roll it's 3rd string 2nd 1st 2nd and that would complete that measure and got fast and could do chord changes with and got like second nature and so just sang songs and did chord changes to this roll ." Note" you can find chord changes on internet along with songs and have good sites for this or use search engine . Anyways then i learned to change roll patterns and alternate and then started adding licks to the rolls and that's where i'm at today . This roll thing got the right hand the left hand and the head in between all in time with eachother and very fast pick'in now . I will contunue to learn more tabulature songs but the roll way i have over 150 songs i do and learn those in about 15 minutes a piece . The rolls save me also because i play along with others at jam sessions and it would be impossable for me to play tabulature to all there songs they play so i can fit right in and just keep timing good with there's and find roll patterns that work good for there songs and add melody or lead notes . This is all a second nature thing for me now and always improving and discovering new thing and adding hammer ons and slides to right now so in beginning process . Ok there's an ear full for now . Keep an open mind and pick daily .

Thanks Scott, that was some great info, yes i really like the rolls, a new one i have found is 3 1 3 2, I am not going to give up I feel like sooner of later I will pick it up, no to mechcial, but i love making noise with my hands and I don't know how to quit, I just sit on the porch after my wife and kid go to sleep , and pick over and over again after a while it sounds so good to me, cause i know what it took for me to produce sound in the first place, many, many7 many weeks of plucking, thank for the encouragement , pick on!!!

Hey fellas, this looks like the group for me. I started playing in 2007 with a few lessons to get me started. Then I got the Mel Bay 'teach yourself Banjo' and DVD. This was good. Then i got bored and laid it down and am only starting to get back in again. I love the sound of the banjo and I am about half way through the Mel Bay book. My current plan to is to keep at it daily and work my fingers till they get faster on those rolls.

welcome a board every one, hope the trip isi worth the picking, I have to remember it is a slow prosess, earl practiced 8 to 10 hours a day. so we that can play 1 to 2 hour s a day will take a awhile!!
